Solar Powered Bollards

PLB Series

Ideal solar choice for low level architectural and commercial pathway and landscape lighting applications.

Utilizing solar power and LED lighting the PLB bollards are fully self contained and offer significant benefits over typical wired bollards:

Bollard 1 Bollard 2 Bollard 3
  • low installed costs and minimal site impacts with no trenching, cabling or wiring
  • minimal ongoing costs with no electricity bills or bulbs to change
  • immune from power outages
  • provide a visibly green statement with no ongoing carbon emissions

The performance of the PLB Series Solar LED Bollard is maximised through the use of proprietary Energy Management System (EMS) technology that allows the luminaire to function in harmony with its environment.

Solar Lighting Technology

Energy Control Module (ECM)
Urban Solar has developed an intuitive controller for solar powered charging and light control. The Energy Control Module or ECM has been developed and refined after years of research and development along with rigorous field testing.

ECM is a special algorithm designed and patented (pending filing) by Urban Solar Corp. that enables its software to automatically adjust LED (light emitting diode) intensity and duration according to prevailing solar and weather conditions. ECM dramatically extends the reliability of the solar lighting in areas of higher latitude or during harsh winter or otherwise low-sunlight conditions by automatically adjusting the on time duration and or reducing LED light levels after assessing battery level and prevailing sunlight charging conditions.

ECM is also proactive. Traditionally stand alone solar power systems are sized for the worst period of the year in order to power the required load or lighting profile (illumination intensity and duration). As such, during the majority of the year, most of the solar available is wasted as the solar insolation or site charging conditions improve and the dusk to dawn period decreases. In a given application, when an abundance of solar exists, ECM will deliver the maximum illumination level based on variables such as available solar panel power and local geographic solar charging conditions.

Urban Solar's ECM also offers features such as temperature control, in field adjustment and data download capabilities. With this full suite of intuitive controls the ECM can meet almost any solar illumination specification through superior technology and un-matched reliability.

Light Emitting Diodes (LED)
A light-emitting-diode (LED) is a semiconductor diode that emits light when an electric current is applied in the forward direction of the device, as in the simple LED circuit. The effect is a form of electroluminescence where incoherent and narrow-spectrum light is emitted from the p-n junction in a solid state material.

LEDs are widely used as indicator lights on electronic devices and increasingly in higher power applications such as flashlights and area lighting. An LED is usually a small area (less than 1 mm2) light source, often with optics added directly on top of the chip to shape its radiation pattern and assist in reflection. The colour of the emitted light depends on the composition and condition of the semiconducting material used, and can be infrared, visible, or ultraviolet.

Solar Power (Photovoltic)
A solar cell or photovoltaic cell is a large area electronic device that converts solar energy into electricity by the photovoltaic effect. Photovoltaics the field of technology and research related to the application of solar cells for solar energy. Sometimes the term solar cell is reserved for devices intended specifically to capture energy from sunlight, while the term photovoltaic cell is used when the source is unspecified. Assemblies of cells are used to make solar modules, or photovoltaic arrays.
