London Transit Shines a Light on Safety with Solar-Powered Security Lighting

Maximizing security & visibility in low light conditions

In partnership with London Transit, we embarked on a mission to enhance the safety and rider visibility of bus stops identified as having low light and safety concerns. With grant funding secured from provincial and federal sources, London Transit was seeking a cost effective, reliable and proven solution.

After a competitive procurement process London Transit awarded a contract to Urban Solar for PV Stop+ solar lighting and transit poles. From June 2023 to October 2024, we deployed 150 PV Stop+ transit pole lighting units and worked with a local structural engineering firm to ensure the installation would withstand local wind and snow load requirements.

Overcoming safety concerns with solar-powered bus stop lighting

Before this project, many unsheltered bus stops in London Transit’s network had limited lighting. This created a chance to boost both rider safety and visibility for bus operators. Addressing these issues was essential to creating a safer and more welcoming transit environment for all riders, especially at night.

A solar lighting unit is mounted on the top of a transit pole and is used to illuminate passengers at night.

Lighting the way for safety, rider visibility & accessibility

London Transit aimed to improve rider safety and visibility in low-light conditions. To meet these objectives, we provided a turnkey solution including lighting technology and independent structural engineering analysis to improve safety, rider visibility and accessibility.

20W PV Stop+ Transit Pole Lighting

We supplied 150 PV Stop+ units with push-button activation to provide on-demand lighting that improves rider safety and visibility at bus stops.

Transit Poles

We supplied durable transit poles designed to ensure secure and long-lasting installations.

Structural Engineering Analysis

A structural engineering analysis was conducted to determine the correct sizing of the concrete pads to support the solution safely. This ensured the transit pole lighting units were safe, compliant and could withstand Ontario’s wind and snow loads.

Bright outcomes for an illuminated transit network

The project’s completion in October 2024 led to immediate and positive impacts including:

Improved Safety & Visibility

PV Stop+ solar lighting units enhance visibility at bus stops and make them safer during nighttime hours. This not only increases passenger safety but also helps bus operators see passengers more clearly.

Increased Rider Confidence & Satisfaction

The push-button activation feature on the lighting units gives passengers control over when the bus stop is illuminated, enhancing their sense of security and comfort.

Better Accessibility

The improved lighting at bus stops makes it easier for all passengers, including those with mobility challenges or visual impairments, to spot and safely approach the stop.
